Toronto-based Throwdown Collective is an award-winning contemporary dance company that supports the collaborative creative pursuits of founders Zhenya Cerneacov, Mairéad Filgate and Brodie Stevenson. The Collective got their start creating a trilogy of site-specific works, commissioned by Toronto's Dusk Dances Festival, that went on to tour throughout Canada. The collective were honored to present two of these works at the 85th Anniversary Celebration of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachussetts, U.S.A.
Throwdown Collective’s first full-length evening of stage works was presented by DanceWorks in Toronto, and included their co-created Various Concert (2015) and Ylem (3 Eggs Ago) (2017), an original commission by Montreal choreographer Lina Cruz. Both works garnered Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Original Choreography and six additional Dora Award nominations. Various Concert also received the Audience Choice Award at dance: made in canada/fait au canada (2015).
This past summer the artists of Throwdown Collective were invited to be artists-in-residence at the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. This incredible experience culminated in The Haliburton Sculpture Forest Re-imagined, a full-length, travelling, site-specific performance incorporating local musicians and students.
Currently Throwdown Collective is in process for a new full-length co-creation for stage.
